Since most accidental overdoses occur in a home setting, it was developed for first responders, as well as family, friends, and caregivers—with no medical training required.

Nebraska residents can obtain NARCAN® Nasal Spray at no cost at a participating pharmacy without a prescription.

Signs of an opioid overdose

Blue/Ashen Lips, Skin, or Fingernails

Unresponsive to voice or touch

Slow, irregular, or stopped breathing

Pinpoint pupils

Choking sounds or snore-like gurgle

Slow heartbeat or low blood pressure

  • Peel back the package to remove the device. Hold the device with your thumb on the bottom of the red plunger and 2 fingers on the nozzle.
  • Place and hold the nozzle tip in either nostril until your fingers touch the bottom of the patient’s nose.
  • Press the red plunger firmly to release the dose into the patient’s nose.
  • Dial 911 and put the patient in the recovery position.
  • Wait for emergency medical care to arrive. (NARCAN® Nasal Spray is NOT a substitute for emergency medical care.)
