Step 1: Know the Signs
If someone has taken opioids (or a pill that could be contaminated with fentanyl), these signs may indicate an overdose:
- They’re unresponsive or hard to wake
- Breathing is slow, irregular, or has stopped
- Lips or fingertips are turning blue or gray
- They’re choking, gurgling, or snoring strangely
If you see any of these signs, don’t wait. Assume it’s an overdose.
Step 2: Call 911 Immediately
Even if you’re unsure, even if you’re afraid — call. The dispatcher will walk you through next steps, and first responders can administer advanced care.
Worried about getting someone in trouble? Nebraska’s Good Samaritan Law protects people who call 911 during an overdose. You won’t be prosecuted for minor drug possession if you’re seeking help in good faith.
Your priority isn’t blame — it’s saving a life.
Step 3: Use Narcan (If You Have It)
Narcan (naloxone) is a nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose. It’s safe, easy to use, and doesn’t harm someone if they weren’t overdosing.
- Spray one dose into one nostril
- Wait 2–3 minutes for a response
- If no response, give a second dose in the other nostril
Even if they seem to recover, they still need emergency care. Always call 911 first, and stay with them.

Step 4: Talk About It Before It Happens
No one wants to be the “what if” house. But it’s better to be the house where someone knew what to do.
Talk with your kids about what an overdose might look like and what they should do if it happens to a friend. Let them know:
- They should never hesitate to call you or 911
- They won’t be in trouble for saving a life
- It’s okay to leave a party or call for help, no matter what

Being prepared doesn’t mean you expect the worst — it means you love your kid enough to cover the hard stuff, just in case.
Add Narcan to your home first-aid kit. Practice what you’d do. Talk about it.
Because if it ever happens at your house, you’ll be glad you were ready.
